Lost a Friend -- May 6, 2009
Actually, I lost a pet, to be more specific, who was one of my closest friends. His name was Aspen, he was a cat, a Himalayan. He recently began to go through kidney failure, which caused a whole host of problems. He was sick for months. Finally, his end came yesterday, very sadly. I am grief stricken. He was with me for twelve years. I've always wondered if pets are waiting for you on the other side when you die. I sure hope so. I dearly want to be with all the pets I have lost throughout the years again. Yesterday was particularly hard, since this little guy looked up to me for everything. I feel honored to have had the chance to raise him and love him like he needed to be loved and raised. I would like to hear other people's thoughts on the afterlife and pets in this blog post. I once saw an old photograph that showed the ghost of a family dog standing next to the family when they were posing for the photo. It gives me hope.

I lost my beloved dog of 13 years last week. He had shown no sign other than old age. Suddenly he hovered near me one night. I could tell something was wrong. I picked him up and held him for several hours--I stroked him, wondering what was wrong. He twisted--his way of saying, "I want to get down." so I put him gently on the floor. He crawled under my chair and curled up. I heard him whimper and breathe irregularly. He died in the night and I found his little body curled as if asleep. We buried him that day and planted a tree over him in our garden. I miss him profoundly. I understand your grief and wish your coming days will provide you with glimpses of peace and comfort.

I am a Christian, a chaplain and I believe in the afterlife. My God loves beautiful things as the creator of the infinite universe, galaxies, dimensions and quantum tachyons and our little world we call earth. My God is love. God does not waste precious resources. I believe that the animal friends we are entrusted with during their short lives are one of God's gifts to us to reflect unconditional love that God offers us. Humans struggle with it. Animals don't seem to have difficulty with it at all. My God of love who doesn't waste creation has a plan for the well being of everything. Matthew speaks to God looking after the sparrows and flowers, saying that King Solomon was not arrayed as these. The God who loves us enough to care for flowers and sparrows, loves your cat and my dog. God has a plan. God's plans are often unfathomable. They are always loving, always wise and have our best at heart. Perhaps, your little Aspen is enjoying vital health now, romping in fields, exploring to his heart's content and curling up on cat thrones that only heaven could design, waiting for the one who loved him on earth and gave him a chance for happiness to find his place in heaven. I send my heartfelt condolences. You will be in my prayers. --Lyndsey Rose Davis <mailto:lyndseydavis@kpillc.net>

Lyndsey, thank you for your spectacular post! It has made me feel a lot better. I know you are right. My mother also gave me a book called There is Eternal Life for Animals. It was wonderful, and very uplifiting. I recommend it to anyone. Lyndsey, I am sory for your loss as well, but I know your dog is watching over you, giving you comfort whenever you need it. If anyone else has any losses they would like to share, feel free.
